The Practical Kitchen with Rebecca Eisenberg

We're chatting about running an anti-diet home cooking blog

I’m in an aspirational relationship with cooking. I love watching cooking reels, researching different recipes, and being awed by how many meals can be made in a single casserole dish.

But…I don’t often actually cook anything. (Huuuuge hat tip to my industrious husband who makes most of the meals we eat.)

I envision my cooking era happening in about 5-7 years when both of my step-kids have graduated from high school, when I can maybe work a little less, when we’ve moved into a place with a beautifully spacious kitchen filled with all the colourful kitchen toys and a bar cart for artisanal cocktails…I have aspirations!

Which is why I so appreciate Rebecca, founder of The Practical Kitchen. Her cooking style is accessible, she does it all in her reasonably-sized kitchen, and she’s anti-diet.

How can you be an anti-diet home cooking blogger? Check out our conversation as we explore all of that…and my still-not-accomplished promise to make bagels from scratch.

Big News from the Fat Joy podcast!! This week was episode 100, and it’s with Aubrey Gordon. We get vulnerable about what it’s like to talk to non-fat folks about fatness and the challenges we’ve experienced with our families.

With the 100th episode, I’m pressing pause on the podcast for a little while. I’m deeply proud of every conversation shared, and I’m also aware of feeling the need for space to see what’s next for Fat Joy.

This newsletter will continue to grow as I share conversations with guests and even some of my own writing exploring my own moments of choosing fat joy. So, please do stay connected with me here. <3

I’m running a Fat Joy writing workshop for Firefly Creative Writing that starts in September and just filled up. In speaking to each participant, it was very clear that we’re all longing for spaces that center fat bodies and our lived experiences, especially for those of us in mid-fat, large-fat, and infinifat bodies.

Future dreams I’m holding are fat-only retreats, group coaching offerings, and additional writing workshops. If these types of offerings are interesting to you as well, let me know what you’d like, and I’ll keep you in the loop.

One of the organizations making systemic-level changes to end size discrimination is the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA). August is Fat Liberation month, and a great time to support NAAFA…and you’ll get a beautiful sticker by Bats Langley celebrating fat joy.

Fat Joy with Sophia Apostol is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
